Whether you love it or hate the thing to death, it’s hard to dispute the fact that the ketogenic diet is a useful fat loss tool for a large proportion of the population. Without rehashing the entire diet, the point is to cause your body to burn stored fat rather than glucose for energy. This diet comes in as many different flavors as one can imagine, with an array of caloric levels, macro levels, and food choices, but one factor is always constant- the need for elevated ketone levels.
Elevated ketone levels mean the switch to burning stored bodyfat has been flipped, and you’re a living fat furnace. As any educated person knows that once you grow a new fat cell, there is no way to eliminate that cell. You can shrink it, but it will never completely disappear without much more drastic and invasive action. Burning ketones, however, means that at the very least you’re burning fat at a high enough rate to at least break even in the pursuit of more mass, so you can lean bulk without fears you’ll end up a sloppy mess by the end of the spring.
This is where BHB salts come in- according to nutrition experts, achieving “light nutritional ketosis” (0.5 mmol/L-1.0 mmol/L), is a good starting point for the keto diet, and as you get deeper into it you aim for “optimal ketosis,” which is when your ketone levels are between 1.0 mmol/L and 3.0 mmol/L. An intake of BHB salts in exactly the ratio in Chaos and Pain’s Keto resulted in “a moderate increase of D-βHB in serum levels” that peaked just above 1.0 mmol/L in a 2018 study, showing that even without dietary alterations it creates an environment in which your body is burning bodyfat as its preferred energy source (Fischer).
What it means for you is simple- you can lean bulk to your heart’s content while supplementing with Keto and expect mass without a significant increase in fat stores, and you can drop into ketosis almost immediately, and stay deep in ketosis when following a strict ketogenic diet. Either way you cut it, with Keto you win.
